Yeah it is a copy. But being able to copy and improve the design is an achievement unique to China. They made a copy of AKM back then and it is better than Russian AKM. I will give China credit for this.

But what you probably don't know is that USA's F-16 and F-15 are in their last decade of service, and will soon be replaced by the next generation fighter. Whereas today China is manufacturing these 80s designs for its future air force.

Also it makes complete sense why China is still producing older aircraft in tandem with newer J-20 and J-35s. China is still a develo nation, just 20 years ago China was still operating MiG-21s, the fact they were able to go from MIG-21 to J-20 in just 20 years is incredible. China also has to continue to operate J-15s as the J-35 requires a catapult, which only 1 of 3 CVs have. J-20 production for the PLAA on the other hand is rapidly increasing with production reaching 200 units per year with an expansion to the factory underway to increase production further. The J-11 basically a land based version of the J-15 is already being completely phased out, being replaced with J-16 and J-20s which are both modern designs.
