First of all, it was not as if china withdrew without any land gains. The entire Aksai Chin was lost in this war. Secondly, the arrogance of Nehru and Krishna Menon in interfering in military matters with absolutely no knowledge coupled with their ignorance, lack of foresight and lack of planning all contributed to this ignominous defeat. They were just plain ignoramuses masquerading as intellectuals with puffed up ego.

China made the mistake by trying to humiliate us. We got the wake up call. Menon was sacked. Military leadership was revamped. Our army provided proof of our new resolve in 1965 to Ayub Khan and to China in 1967 at Nathula .

We have really woken up since then to emerge as fourth most powerful army in the world. Diplomatically too we have done well to emerge as good friend and powerful voice for global south. China? It is left with allies like North Korea, Pakistan and Russia. World wishes to keep it at safe distance while dealing with it. So with hindsight, China was wrong. With Panchsheel, India and China would have worked together to improve life for billions in Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is still not too late. Ball is in China’s court.
