Our China correspondent, Elliot Richards looks around some of the most impressive Chinese cars on display at our flagship live show, and discusses the future of Chinese EVs in Europe. Will they truly take over? And would that be such a bad thing?

I'm in Detroit, me and my entire family worked for the US auto manufacturers and would never consider buying an import...until lately. We are tired of paying $60,000 for outdated, poor-quality automobiles. I bought an American brand luxury SUV five years ago and have no plans to ever buy a new car again unless the prices drop dramatically. On the other hand, the Chinese offer affordable, stylish, high-tech automobiles and reasonable prices. In an effort to protect the American market the US government has imposed a ridiculous 100% tariff on Chinese cars. Our only hope for an affordable car here in America is if BYD buys the Chrysler group using the current factories to build cars here and avoid the import tariffs. If that doesn't happen, I'll be buying used cars from here on out.

You mentioned the slow move toward EVs here in America. There is a huge push by the legacy US automakers to demonize EVs because of the tremendous profits in dealership repair costs. Additionally, I suspect that the petroleum industry is involved as well because in America we use (approxmately) an astonishing 369 million gallons of gasoline per day !

The Chrysler group is owned by Stellantis, I believe, and I'm not aware of them being interested in hiving off their US names or production.
However, Stellantis recently acquired 20% of Leap Motor, and 50% of their export business. That might result in them selling the Leap Motor models in the USA.

@sprockkets - that's the median income for Shanghai - if you include perks and living costs,it would make it $50,000 (and that's assuming they don't get overtime pay ) - so a typical worker can save about $1000 per month there - in america?

hmmmmm......people were laughing at the Koreans in 90's, but you are correct, they certainly are not laughing now, but in the US, they are crying. I remember when the US tried to stop imports of Japanese cars and motorbikes in the 80's by imposing large tariffs against them. It didn't work then, and it sure as hell wont work now.

We at least pressured the japanese to set-up plants in the UK to assemble them and create jobs. I hope we are able to do the same with Chinese/Other manufacturers as well.... although probably won't

you are having the same BYD experience as most of chinese consumers.

although chinese automakers have been building EVs for 20 yrs, chinese consumers just never brought the idea that EVs can ever be better than ICE cars. hence up until 2020, only 10% new cars sold in china were EVs.

however in 2021, chinese EVs market exploded bc Tesla, BYD, and several other new Chinese EV brands brough new driving experience to chinese consumers. by 2024 year end, 55% new cars sold in china are EVs or Hybrid...

those of who brought EVs in china cant never go back to ICE cars. that's what i hv heard from many of my mainland chinese friends. they said that EVs are simply a newer & better technolgy that brings superior overall driving experience in every aspect.

New Zealand are full of them. Cheaper than the big brands and most of them have 7 year warranties on them.

Its simple. Chinese manufacturers are offering better products at lower prices. The Japanese did this in the 70s and look what happened. Manufacturers and lobbying nations won’t let that happen again.

Australian car industry is all but gone now, so they allow Chinese cars in. Wife drives an electric MG for work and she prefers it to all others on the fleet.

I see more and more models from BYDs on the road here in the EU. Tariffs won't stop anything.

Just to be clear the UK will not follow the European Union in imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars sold in the UK. The exsting tariffs placed on all foreign goods sold in the UK still applies. This is one of the few "Brext benefits" thus far.

BYD is already gaining in popularity in Norway with the HAN, SEAL 4x4 & Sealion 7 which are all starting to become a fairly common sight in my town atm. The smaller Dolphin is not something I've seen more than 2-3 times, even tho it's heavily promoted atm. Hongqi is not a rare sight either. Tho I say starting to become a common sight. It's ofc nowhere near Tesla sightings. Or the big 3 sellers atm with VW, Hyundai, and Toyota EVs that still sell way more in my hometown area. But they still are a common sight on the top 10 seller list
