European automakers are amidst a crisis, struggling with falling profits, plant closures, layoffs, and sluggish sales. The third-quarter earnings reports from companies like Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis paint a dire picture. Last week, the issue became public as Volkswagen saw a massive workers' strike in Germany, while Stellantis' CEO abruptly resigned due to a boardroom battle. Analysts say declining demand, rising costs, and fierce competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers have hit the traditional leaders of the European car market. Adding to their woes, the European Union has introduced tariffs on Chinese EVs, which is expected to impact domestic carmakers as well. Amid these issues, automakers are also grappling with the costly transition to electric vehicles, as the EU plans to phase out petrol engines by 2035, threatening further disruption in the industry.

america had the same issue & look where we are now. can't afford a car at all, after we bailed out the car industry. in reality, there are enough cars sitting unbought on lots to circle the earth.

how many cars can be bought?  none, can't afford it.

Germany strength was cheap energy from Russia, now they buying LNG which is twice to three times as expensive, meaning people pay more too and have less to spend on the economy, car brands pay more to create the same product, less profit, less to invest into EVs, less to use as subsidy. European cars in general and German cars in particular have long since stopped offering that one big thing that drew customers - value for money. No wonder the Koreans, Japanese and more recently Chinese cars have filled that void.

And instead of fixng the real problem, they have come up with the ham-handed measure of scaling down operations (closing factories and laying off workers).

When it comes to technology, European carmakers only bring new features to their high-end models. On the other hand, Asian brands are offering good tech across almost all their models. Chinese brands are even ahead with very modern technology.
