Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy refused to back down from his controversial stance on extended working hours, offering an unapologetic "I am sorry, I have not changed my view." The tech veteran, who sparked nationwide debate last year by urging Indian youth to work 70-hour weeks, declared he would take this belief "to my grave."

"I don't believe in work-life balance... I have not changed my view," Murthy told CNBC-TV18 at the Global Leadership Summit. He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reported 100-hour workweeks, suggesting citizens should match such dedication. "I will take this with me to my grave," he added.

"I am sorry, I have not changed my view. I will take this with me to my grave," he added, standing firm on his controversial stance from last year that sparked nationwide debate on workplace culture.

He maintains that his controversial advice stems from personal experience. The 78-year-old tech pioneer revealed his own rigorous work schedule during his tenure at Infosys, arriving at the office at 6:20 AM and leaving at 8:30 PM, working six and a half days weekly until retirement. "I'm proud of it," he stated.

Murthy expressed dissatisfaction with India's 1986 transition from a six-day to five-day workweek. "I was not very happy with that. I think in this country, we have to work very hard because there is no substitute for hard work even if you're the most intelligent guy," he emphasised.

The statement follows his comments from last year in an conversation with Mohandas Pai urging Indian youth to work 70 hours weekly to boost national productivity and compete globally. "India's work productivity is one of the lowest in the world... So therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, 'this is my country, I want to work 70 hours a week,'” Murthy said.

Murthy was working on his own business not for some other company. Why should an employee work overtime for some company for fixed pay destroying his health and family. This is the slavery mindset of private IT corporates against which there is need of IT union for employees

I totally agree with Mr.Narayana Murthy. Infact during the late 90s and 2000's 1st decade many of the techies in companies like Cisco,BT, Oracle in India office etc used to work long hours w/o ever cribbing about it.

not sure why anyone bothers about a has been. if Murthy is so convinced why not implement this policy as a test case in Infosys and if it works then ask others to copy. he obviously has not learnt from his mistake when he got a back lash the first time he made this stupid statement. good workers learn from their mistakes. with age he has gone senile.

This guy has gone completely mad. Why are you comparing Modi with someone with family and friends? And on top of that, AI is evolving and soon anything back in 1990s that used to take weeks will be done in minutes. Instead of finding ways to boost the output, he wants to kill morale by making employees work daily. This is not industrial revolution or world wars. Also, doctors and founders working 100 hours is nothing compared to this slavery. They are working for themselves and we are working for them and they expect us to show up 6 days a week and for 12 hours, bull*it.

It is natural for him as through the decades his company has done only one thing, selling engineer's time not software. more the time engineer spends at work more is the billing and revenue the company.

back in 1960s and 1970s or even till end of 1980s..world was mechanical and hardly the men and women has had any stress ..so it was easy for him to work for 70 hours then but definitely not good for today's world...his suggestion is wrong
