It is not just China, Indians have this inherent ability to compare anything and everything in life. 不仅仅是中国，印度人拥有这种与生俱来的能力去比较生活中的任何事物。

Indians don't see everyone as different and unique in their own sense. The society in India is feudal, patriarchal and close minded. The sense of achievement is often does not come from within. Thats exactly where this habit of comparing with one another starts.

To point out I had lost the count, number of times my friends comparing benefit of eating with hands over eating with fork and knife. Interestingly we Indians don't compare that with the chopsticks.

印度人并不认为每个人都是独一无二的。印度的社会是封建的，家长制的，思想封闭的。成就感往往不是来自内心。这正是这种相互比较的习惯开始的地方。

I believe this comparing business is to massage the ego and trying to prove the sense of superiority.

Now, why Chinese/China ? This is because of a near perfect PR machine run by the current PM and his team in run upto his election in 2014.

In my opinion for following reasons:

Both are neighbors, and it’s human nature to start competing. India and China compare with each other the way colleagues start comparing within a team.
Both are big powers and huge regarding land, resources, culture, economy, military, knowledge, wisdom, ambitions, etc.
It is healthy to keep competition alive and keep inspiring each other for good reasons.
We have strong cultural ties, and for centuries we co-exsted in peace, it is recently (a century ago) we started having conflicts. Otherwise, largely we were at peace and respected each other’s freedom and might.
There is a certain degree of jealousy and appreciation for each other. This also makes us keep comparing with each other.

On Quora there are more Indians than Chinese, so it looks like only Indians are comparing with China. But when I met Chinese outside India, I found they think same. But overall during face-to-face conversation, I have found Chinese friendly towards India; especially Chinese girls :)

As you have seen in life, we always compare with better. So there are many factors for comparing India with China.

For a very simple reasons:

Both India & China are among the nations who are seeking power.

Both countries have emerged as potential market of entire world.

For example, when we are in grade school, we used to compare & compete with our classmates, neighbour’s kids & with our cousins. We don’t compare with the student of other state or nation.

Same goes here, since China is India’s neighbour and competitior for power and foreign investments. So, we simply tends to compare & compete with each other.
