The Shanghai Metro consists of 16 lines, a Maglev line and a further 5 lines under construction and more in planning stages. The metro covers over 600km and links all areas of the city. It’s the largest metro system in the world and the second busiest used by about 10 million people every day. It’s cheap to use (about 4RMB or 40c for most journeys). It can get crowded at times and the security checks on entering the system are frustrating.
Shanghai buses are also well used. Traffic can slow them down and it can be difficult using them if you don’t know Chinese but the bus announcements are in english and any Map app on your phone will show you where the buses go. Buses cost a little less than the metro. Some buses run through the night whereas the metro finishes between 11pm and midnight.
Taxs are everywhere. The starting rate for most taxs is 14RMB ($1.70). The Didi app (Chinese equivalent of Uber) is commonly used and available in English if you have a Chinese SIM. Provide the driver with the nearest cross streets if you’re unable to provide him/her with the correct address. Taxs are reliable and I’ve never been ripped off despite using them hundreds of times over the past few years.
Shared bicycles are omnipresent. They clog up the pavements and cause a mess. They are extremely cheap and as such they can be in a bad condition. They also lack reflectors and don’t have lights on them. They’re handy but do you really want to cycle on these roads and in these pollution levels? Plenty of people do though.
You can also walk. The streets in the Former French Concession can be very nice for walking especially outside of peak hours.

The Shanghai Metro system is very efficient. It’s laid out well and services the majority of the municipality. The subway makes announcements in Chinese and English. The buses are equally efficient and easy to use as well. Some buses make announcements in English but most don’t. If you don’t understand Chinese, it’s best to just count the stops. Tax cabs are a good option as well but require rudimentary Chinese or a pre-printed address. I would stay away from the dark blue and dark red taxs as they are typically privately owned and are known to be untrustworthy at times with regards to fleecing of customers. Depending on the length of your stay, you may want to buy a Metro Card that can be used on the bus and in taxs.

Shanghai has an excellent public transport system on a par with any developed city. It is world class, clean, cheap and efficient.
The traveller has a full choice of transport methods:
- bus
- tax
- subway (Metro)
- maglev
- trams
- hire bicycles
Whenever I am in Shanghai, I naturally gravitate towards using the subway most of the time. You can get to practically any place in the city via the subway network. Trains run frequently, though, like in any other large city, they can be crowded at rush hour.

Really really good is the short answer.
Between the subway (I think now 16 different lines and counting…) and buses it’s really easy to get anywhere you want to for very little money. The coverage of the city by subway network is one of the best I’ve seen anywhere in the world.
While it may be crowded at peak hours it’s generally comfortable.
And for the occasions when those modes of transport don’t work you can use a ride hailing app (didi, not Uber).
When I talk about comfortable and convenient I mean that you could commute to work in a nicely dry cleaned suit and arrive at the other end fresh and crisp - unless you pick the short period of time when the subway is super crammed.

there are 17+ lines of metro. You can take them across many parts of the city. I believe the metro lines connect Shanghai to Suzhou now. Many downtown locations are served by multiple lines of metro.
Tax is easy to flag. And there are several Uber-like apps. Between them, a translation app, and some forward planning, you can get to basically anywhere in the city.
Buses are clean, air conditioned, fast, and pretty efficient. Public transportation is cheap. Again, you can download apps to help you.

I have not lived in Shanghai, so I cannot comment as a resident.
While on the trips I’ve been on to Shanghai, the most common forms of public transportation I’ve seen are the Shanghai Metro and the metropolitan bus network. There are also taxs and bike shares I believe (I might be wrong on this one).
But… Since I was mainly on private tour group bus, it’s hard to say accurately, nonetheless, based on my observation it was the listed methods above. Shanghai should be a relatively easy city to get around, especially seeing that it’s one heck of a metropolis.

Shanghai’s public transportation is quite modern (compared to Beiing’s antiquate Subway Line 1 and 2). Majority of subway lines are commissioned after 2000 and surface transportation network has been constantly evolving with the latest battery powered buses covering most of the city area. Since I don’t patron buses, so cannot say much about them. But they look new and well maintained and most of them seem to be air conditioned.
Subway network is quite extensive and if you live or work with 1 km radius of a station, you really don’t have to own a car at all. Right now, you can use ApplePay to ride subway, so you don’t have to carry that old stored value card around.
Having said that, one annoyance of riding subway in China (everywhere indeed) is the security check at every station. Since the original design of a station’s layout did not consider this kind of high level security inspection, it could get very crowded during rush hours or at a train station, so expect long lines. My suggestion, unless absolutely necessary, don’t carry anything when riding subway, so you don’t have to wait in the line for your bags to be scanned, instead, you can proceed directly to the body scanner.

I've lived in both New York and Shanghai. Here's my take:
Subway:
- The Shanghai subway is brand new, cleaner and quieter. Stations are air conditioned, there are glass walls so people can't fall onto the tracks. By any reasonable metric it's a better ride, but it hasn't developed much character. The Shanghai subway is like a late model Hyundai, cheaply built but clean and new. The New York subway is like a classic old Packard whose owner puts a lot of work into it.
- The Shanghai subway stops running by between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m., depending on the station, which is hugely lame; the New York subway runs 24/7/365.
- I disagree that the Shanghai subway is a lot more crowded than the NYC subway - I would say in general it's 10% to 50% more crowded. You're less likely to get a seat, but real jamming usually only happens on certain lines at rush hour.
- The Shanghai subway is still getting built out! Lines 12 and 16 and and extension of line 11 appeared last year, Line 13 this year! In general, coverage in the core area of the city is excellent and even in the suburbs is pretty good.

Buses
- The Shanghai bus system is very extensive but quite difficult to navigate, even for locals but especially if you don't read Chinese. The buses announce stops in English, but bus stop signage is Chinese only.
Taxs
- Taxs in Shanghai are much cheaper than NYC and easy to find, except at rush hour or in the rain. Drivers don't speak English so be prepared.

- As User mentioned there are ferries across the Huangpu at the Bund. More for character than as serious transportation.
- The world's fastest public transportation, the Maglev, will take you from Pudong airport to a transfer station in Pudong at 250 mph! Again not always that useful as transportation, but a must do if you're visiting.
Payment
- RMB 2 for a bus, 3-5 for the subway depending on where you're going.
- You can get a stored value card that can be used on the subway, buses (including airport buses), ferries and taxs. But it's not cheaper, and there's a 30RMB deposit that's really hard to get back. I heard a weekly or weekend pass was going to be introduced, but I don't think it has been yet.
