连镇高铁于2015年9月全线开工建设，北起江苏东北部连云港市，经淮安、扬州市，跨长江后终至江苏南部镇江市，线路全长约304公里，设计标准为客运专线，设计时速为250公里，其中连云港至淮安段已于2019年12月16日开通运营。此次开通运营的淮丹段起自淮安市，途经宝应县、高邮市、扬州市，终至镇江市，正线全长199公里，设淮安东、宝应、高邮北、高邮、扬州东、大港南、丹徒7座车站
