Shenzhen has gone through something of a massive renovation in the last ten years. For a long time Hon g Konger’s would often regard Shenzhen as a crime ridden dirty factory town notorious for scams, thieves, and prostitution. It was common for Hong Ko ng businessmen to have “second wives” or mistresses residing in the city.

The city has embarked on major construction and renovation projects which have dramatically altered the landscape of the city. Green leafy suburbs with posh real estate developments litter the outer districts. Mini Beach resorts line up along the coasts of Dapeng and Yantian districts. The overall cleanliness has improved dramatically with convoys of street cleaning trucks and armies of maintenance staff completing gardening and renovation projects. Not to mention the electric tax’s and buses that roam the streets.

Had you asked in 2006, I would’ve said, well… maybe not. Arriving in SZ from HK usually meant Lowu Luohu and Lok Ma Chau/Huang Gang, which were pretty creepy and dirty – although they’re better now. So the first impression was in the general neighbourhood of WTF.

But project Shenzhen has moved forward and FAST. I myself don’t recognize, at times, the Shenzhen city I first saw in 2006. And it’s not just the buildings. All buses and taxs have switched to electric. The air is so much better now.

And it still looks like the poor cousin of Shenzhen I can see from my windows.

It depends where you go to. Basically “Guannei/关内” is cleaner than Ho ngkong and “Guanwai/关外”. (关内=Urban area of Shenzhen; 关外=suburb area of Shenzhen, in which 关=border checkpoint sites, which had been abandoned for 20 years or so)

Some exceptions in Guannei/Urban area: Meilin (梅林), ili (西丽), Nantou (南头), Songshan (松坪山), Baishizhou (白石洲), Guangxa (岗厦). But it’s getting cleaner day by day.

Again, if you go to Coco Park, it’s definitely cleaner than lots of area in HK; And if you go to Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀) of HK, you don’t find dirty zones either.

My last time to HK was 2015 and my last visit to Shenzhen was in July, 2020, Shenzhen changes every day, so my memory might be out of date.
