NEW DELHI: A drive to identify children at risk of child marriage, conducted on the directions of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, shows that more than 11.5 lakh children in 27 states and seven UTs, most of them girls, were found "vulnerable" as they had either dropped out of school, were out or school, or had been irregular or absent from school for long without any intimation to school authorities.

Of the children identified, more than 5 lakh children were classified as vulnerable in UP, 1.5 lakh in Assam, and close to 1 lakh in MP. Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands reported no vulnerable children. The NCPCR report also states that many districts did not conduct the exercise, and Goa and Ladakh did not share data.

The campaign launched in March this year nearly a month ahead of Akshya Tritya - a day when a large number of child marriages are solemnised in the garb of mass marriages - resulted in states map over 6 lakh schools covering nearly three lakh villages and blocks across 34 states and UTs.

The data has been sent to states last week along with a letter from NCPCR chief Priyank Kanoongo who has asked to ensure measures to step-up prevention of child marriage. Of the identified children, the states have been asked to collect data on 'at risk' children.

The Somnambulant Court of India very slyly passed the buck to GOI regarding extending g Prohibition of Child Marriage Act to all communities and religions. Instead they asked GOI to bring laws to ban child betrothals as if Govt can ban unofficial and unwritten covenants between parents of such kids.

it's a shame to see in the comments sections people are blaming muslims and Hindus for child marriage. But the fact is parents of any community are suffering from scarcity of food and money, there are no jobs and inflation has forced families to marry their daughters at a young age.,it's the fault of the government only.

This is western SOROS backed propaganda. There is no child marriage or child labor in India. Only Muslims are practicing child marriage . This is not prevalent in Hindu community at all.

However beside of this when it comes to the rape cases then culprit never see the age of victim.,In my point of view, it's better to be get marriage at the age of 15 to 18 instead of getting raeped at the age of minor.

Why they are not attending schools, reasons can be many poverty, child safety, joblessness, transportation and there are many factors which plays it part in a girl child not attending the schools. First sort these factors and then do the survey. I'm pretty sure data will be same year after year until these factors are not tackled or improved.

Parents of manual laborers don't think education will help them. Having too many children is also a factor, as mothers want daughters to help them in housekee etc. Also, unambiguous parents don't want their children to be better than them. Uneducated parents always have uneducated children. It is a vicious cycle.
