I am seriously considering visiting India for the first time, but I am concerned about the safety and pollution levels across Indian cities. Since I will be living in Shenzhen, China, a month from now, which will make international travel much easier, and India is on my bucket list of places to visit.

I have been to India multiple times and can attest to the pollution and overall dismal sanitation. China has come so far; however, when I first visited in 85', it too had a sanitation problem. With increasing affluence, education, central govermental leadership, sanitation services and proenvironmental concern, it is obvious that things have vastly improved. It is definitely possible to make things change in India.

It's not just the pollution, it's also the amount of rubbish that frightens me. Both in rivers and on land. I guess that's also a form of pollution. I think it boils down to people not caring, corruption, and a lack of willingness to do something about it. I just feel sorry for those who do care and are trying their best to do something.

The sad part is, India is so polluted for nothing.

China was polluted because of rapid industrialization. But then successfully improved her waste management to reduce pollution.

India is still very, very poor. Extreme poverty does not promote cleanliness and sanitation. Extreme poverty does not encourage positive cultural behaviour.

India's government is sclerotic. It cannot address the country's many domestic woes.
