I made it to Chongqing, China!! With a population of 36 million (yes, you read that right – 36 million!), Chongqing is a municipality that feels more like its own country. This city is massive and chaotic with futuristic skyscrapers and bustling street markets. It’s one of the most affordable big cities in the world and there’s something here for everyone to explore.

In this old-school travel vlog, I’ll take you on an adventure through the heart of Chongqing to meet the locals, try some of the spiciest food (hot pot, anyone?), and uncover the wacky culture that makes Chongqing such a unique destination.

What really stood out to me about Chongqing is how it has all the energy and conveniences of a place like Hong Kong, but with almost ZERO tourists. The culture shock here is real, the people are incredibly kind, and the vibe is unlike any other city I’ve experienced in my travels to all 197 countries.

我来到了中国重庆！！这里生活着3600万人口（是的，你没看错——3600万！），重庆是一个直辖市。这座城市庞大而混乱，有着未来主义风格的摩天大楼和繁华的街头市场。它是世界上物价最实惠的大城市之一，这里值得每个人探索。

我在重庆的中心地带进行一场冒险，见见当地人，品尝最辣的食物（火锅），并揭示重庆成为独特旅游特目的地的古怪文化。

I'm an American who used to live in China. Chongqing was easily one of, if not my favorite cities in China and possibly the world too. The food was insanely delicious, the skyline is among the best of any city in the world, and the vibes are just off the charts cool, there is just something about the energy there that's awesome. And somehow despite all of that almost none of my friends have any clue what Chongqing is, they didn't even know it exsted. And when I was there, I would go days at a time without seeing a single other foreigner, it was so surreal being in a city that massive and it it somehow also feeling like a secret to people outside of China.

And just to clear something up - for those who think Tokyo is the largest city in the world - think again The Chongqing municipality is the largest city when it comes to area at an impressive 5,472 square kilometers (2x the side of Tokyo). In terms of population, you will find conflicting sources online but both cities/urban areas have approxmately 33-36 million residents. And although Tokyo is very densely populated, it doesn’t come close to Chongqing’s sheer scale - trust me! If you ever get the chance to visit Chongqing, it’ll really blow your mind! About the city being "foggy" - it's caused more by Chongqing's geographic location and distinct climate than by pollution. It's highly humid and doesn't get a lot of sunshine throughout the year, even though it's one of the hottest cities in summer. The city actually has another nickname 雾都 (City of Fog).

Chongqing has a heavy history during the WW2, It was literally flattened by the Japanese. You ask any Chinese, and they will tell you how horrific that time was. However that part of the history is not known to the world, and the Chinese don't have the enthusiasm to make loads of "Hollywood" movies to spread the stories. The people of Chongqing are so open and "Hot" like their food preferences. They thrived from the past and are still making the best of life.

China is an amazing country and its people are wonderful. I have been there many times but there is so much more to explore. Most westerners don't know about Chongqing because our western media have been shutting us off completely or projecting China negatively. Now, it is visa free to visit China from many countries, so go there and see how exciting it is.

I visited Chongqing way back in 1992 on the way to Tib. I was fresh out of college, teaching in Taiwan, and backpacking through Asia and Europe (92 and 94). Back then, Chongqing and other Chinese cities looked nothing like they do now. Even Beiing was grey, sooty, and mostly ugly. The pace of urbanization and modernization since then is mindblowing

I live in the US. Where I live (a well-known big city), mostly chain restaurants are scattered along long stretches of streets, with little to marvel at. Many concrete buildings, and no community. People don't really walk here. You either get in a car, or some other means, from A to B and back. To get a fraction of the feeling of what I'm gathering from Chongqing, your best bet is a multi-level shop plaza (if it still exsts and hasn't become a ghost mall.) There is a reason people feel so alone and disconnected here. Because we are. Everything is so stretched out, so far away and few options of places we can gather together the way we see in the city Chongqing. The income inequality keeps people trapped from car to job, job to home with little opportunity to walk among fellow citizens to enjoy some street food. Hurts that when people think of the US, their first thought is gun violence. We need to do better.

Here is a misunderstanding of Chongqing's population. It's a province level city, a lot of suburban and rural areas are administrated under the tile of Chongqing "CITY", but the urban population is aroud 10 million, which means Chongqing city itself is actually smaller than Shanghai, Beiing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen

Chongqing is MASSIVE. Here're some numbers about this city (and they are REAL): 20,000+ bridges, 17 metro lines of 550 km, 300+ bus lines, 4,000 km interstate (高速公路), a tunnel network of 350 km, 35,000 hotpot restaurants, just to name a few.
