Former US President Jimmy Carter, who had been in hospice care since early 2023 died at the age of 100 at his Georgia home, surrounded by family, US media reported on Monday.

Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, earning widespread admiration for his integrity and humanitarian efforts. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work promoting de ocracy and human ri hts worldwide.

Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s rise to the presidency was rooted in his humility and dedication to public service. A Georgia governor with a background in engineering, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a relative outsider. His promise of honesty, encapsulated in the pledge, “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me,” struck a chord with a nation recovering from the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War.

Carter’s campaign, funded publicly and centred on transparency, helped him narrowly defeat incumbent Gerald Ford. His presidency, however, was a mix of triumphs and trials.

Carter’s influence extended well beyond his presidency. One recollects Jimmy Carter’s state visit to India. American officials in their colonial or imperial style insisted that some town be named after Carter to commemorate his visit to India. It was an odd request for India. They told the Americans that in India such customs of naming cities and towns after foreigners were long gone. Yet the US insisted. So a place in Gurgaon called Kartarpur was named after Carter. So, even if people continued to call it Kartarpur it would sound like a mispronouncation of Carterpur. All went home happy.

He literally was personally involved in the building of thousands of houses for the less-fortunate at Habitat for Humanity. What a legacy.
