NEW DELHI: In a major boost for the indigenous Pinaka multi-launch artillery rocket systems, the PM-led cabinet committee on security on Wednesday cleared two major deals worth around Rs 10,200 crore for its lethal ammunition.

The two deals are for high-explosive pre-fragmented rocket ammunition at a cost of about Rs 5,700 crore and area denial munitions for around Rs 4,500 crore, which will cater for the 10 Pinaka regiments already ordered by the over 11-lakh strong Army, as was reported by TOI earlier this month.

The high-explosive pre-fragmented rocket ammunition has an extended strike range of 45-km, while the aerial denial munitions can be launched to a distance of 37-km. The area denial munitions have the capability to saturate a target area with multiple bomblets, including anti-tank and anti-personnel minelets.

The two types of ammunition will be produced by the Nagpur-based private sector Solar Group and state-owned Munitions India Ltd in a 60:40 ratio, with the contracts now set to be inked with them within the next few days, sources told TOI.

The Army currently has four Pinaka regiments, with some of the launchers also deployed in high-altitude areas along the northern borders with China, while the other six are in the process of being inducted.

DRDO has developed a variety of ammunition for the Pinaka, including rockets with 45-km extended range and 75-km guided extended range. The plan now underway is to further enhance the range first to 120-km and then to 300-km.

“As soon as we get longer ranges, we might drop plans for other alternate long-range weapons we are looking at and concentrate on it (Pinaka),” Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi had stated earlier this month

消息人士告诉《印度时报》，这两种弹药将由位于那格浦尔的私营企业索拉尔集团和国有印度弹药有限公司按60：40的比例生产，合同预计将在未来几天内与它们签署。

目前，印度陆军拥有四个“皮纳卡”炮兵团，部分发射器已部署在与中国接壤的北部边境高海拔地区，另外六个炮兵团正在组建中。

印度国防研究与发展组织（DRDO）为“皮纳卡”开发了多种弹药，包括射程45公里的增程火箭弹和射程75公里的制导增程火箭弹。目前正在推进的计划是先将射程进一步提升至120公里，然后提升至300公里。

本月早些时候，印度陆军参谋长乌彭德拉·德维韦迪将军曾表示：“一旦我们获得更远的射程，我们可能会放弃正在考虑的其他替代远程武器计划，转而专注于（‘皮纳卡’）。”

We need not have Tom - tomed this news. Sure our enemies are no fools and they are watching us. After all the two enemies, China and interestingly Pakistan too are ahead of us in many military - related fields. Especially China is far ahead of us in every field, perhaps excepting in the unquestionable valour of our defence forces. From the time of Korea war we have witnessed China's ability to throw in countless number of its soldiers in battle and overwhelming its adversaries. Only Vietnam was able to withstand its evil designs and defeat it, thereby exposing the incompetence of its commanders. Now the question is whether our political leadership of today is as competent as Mrs. Gandhi in 1971, however much we dislike her, in strategic acumen and as well whether the present Indian defence Chiefs are as fearless and strategically as sound and competent as the then Army Chief Gen. Sam Manekshaw? I have my own doubts in both. The infamous Agnipath is a clear pointer in this. It is not the armaments that you amass in the field of battle that win wars. As is famously said by Field Marshal Montgomery of El Alamein that " It is the Man behind the machine who is important than the machine. " As a patriotic Indian I am worried about the quality and competence of our present leadership, both political and military.

中国和巴基斯坦在好多军事相关的方面都比咱们强。特别是中国，除了咱印度军队的英勇没得说，其他方面都把咱们甩老远。

This means nothing unless we invest in R&d. Our budget for R&D is only.65% GDP. China has 3%, US has 4%, Israel has 6%, Japan and S Korea have 4%, UK and Germany are at 3%, France at 2%, Russia at 1%. We atleast need to increase that to 1.5%. Scientists should be one of the highest paid ones.
