DeepSeek's founder Liang Wenfeng skipped the two-day Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris despite being invited to attend, as top Chinese experts in the field trumpeted the country's role in the global AI industry.

China's AI progress, as demonstrated by advances such as DeepSeek's open-source models, contributed to the global technology community and drove wider adoption, the country's academics told the conference, which took place on Monday and Tuesday.

Since US start-up OpenAI released ChatGPT and ushered in a new AI era, the field has been develo quickly. DeepSeek showed the world a means to build AI systems at a low cost, said Andrew Yao Chi-chih, a computer scientist and Turing Award winner from Beiing's Tsinghua University, at a side event.

"Since [DeepSeek's AI models] are open source, they'll be able to benefit the global AI community by having all of us advance the technology together," Yao said.

DeepSeek's breakthrough has sparked a rush among local companies from advanced manufacturing sectors to internet services to adopt the start-up's low-cost, high-performance AI models. Personal computer giant Lenovo Group, Shenzhen-based robotics firm UBTech and electric vehicle maker Geely were among the first to integrate DeepSeek's models into their products in recent weeks.

Despite its popularity, the Hangzhou-based start-up and Liang have stayed mum about their next moves, declining media requests for interviews.

With the speed of AI technological progress, there was a reason to believe that the wider adoption of AI across various industries would happen sooner than people expected, bringing serious safety concerns and issues, Yao warned.

The world was still "unclear" about the risks and should stay alert to any abuse of AI, as well as the possibility that the technology could one day grow out of human control, he said.

"We need to prepare for and understand the potential risks so as to alleviate them," Yao said, adding that close international collaboration would play a critical role in addressing such challenges.

AI safety governance was a topic that concerned the welfare of all of humanity and was in need of global attention and participation, said Xue Lan, dean of Tsinghua's Schwarzman College and Institute for AI International Governance.

Xue noted that China launched a global AI governance initiative in 2023 and had been appealing for broader participation from other countries. He added that China respected differences in policies and practices between nations.

Separately, the China AI Safety & Development Association, an AI safety institute, would represent the country in global dialogues about AI, Xue added.

At the Paris AI Summit, organisers also announced the founding of the Sustainability AI Coalition to facilitate a more environmentally sustainable path of AI development. Founding members include Chinese search engine operator Baidu, Lenovo, as well as US chip giants Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.

另外，在巴黎人工智能峰会上，主办方还宣布成立可持续人工智能联盟，以推动人工智能走上更具环境可持续性的发展道路。创始成员包括中国搜索引擎运营商百度、联想，以及美国芯片巨头英伟达和超威半导体公司。
