New report shows one type of vehicle outselling all others in China: 'A reflection of the current situation'

New industry data has revealed that domestic sales for all types of new electric vehicles in China rose by over 40% last year, while those for new gas-powered cars plummeted

According to the China Association for Automobile Manufacturers, 31.4 million vehicles were sold in the world's largest automobile market in 2024, representing an increase of 4.5% from the previous year.

In turn, the sales of traditional gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles went down 17% in 2024 to only 11.6 million and accounted for 51% of overall new car sales.

Chinese passenger car exports also increased by 20% in 2024, and 1.28 million of those exports represent what Chinese automakers have described as "new energy vehicles," including pure battery EVs, fuel-cell cars, and plug-in hybrids. That represents a 6.7% increase from 2023.

It's got American and European automakers scrambling. The United States announced a 100% tariff on all China-made electric cars last year in response, as did the European Union, claiming that the country's industry benefited from unfair government subsidies.

In reality, these rebates encouraged greater passenger car sales in China, which rose by 13.6% to 22.6 million in December 2024. More EVs on the road can help lessen the impact of Chinese air pollution domestically and globally while saving consumers money.

China has been investing in more EV technology over the years to expand the industry beyond passenger vehicles.

"Higher-end consumers have started to abandon foreign brands and are turning to comparatively better-priced high-end domestic cars," said Tai Chih-yen, an associate researcher at the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, in an interview.

"This is not a so-called consumption downgrade, but more a reflection of the current situation, where many are choosing to be more discreet [in the kinds of cars they drive] and show their patriotism by driving domestic luxury brands."

Since crude oil is largely a fungible commodity, global supply and demand are the primary driver of its price.
Global GDP increased by 2.6% from 2023 to 2024 while global petroleum consumption increased by 2.2%.
Yet global crude oil prices have been steady for more than 2 years.
That stability is largely driven by the 50% market share of EVs in China which is where most of them are being sold.

In other words the most significant driver of the stable price of crude/gasoline is the uptake of EVs globally.
In effect people in the US who drive large SUVs because they have self - image problems are largely subsidised by Chinese EV buyers.
The IRA's subsidies for EVs and charging stations is also help subsidise those who drive gas guzzling SUVs though not anywhere near the subsidy inadvertently provided for by Chinese EV buyers.
I doubt if those SUV buyers in the US have the capability to understand these facts and be grateful to the Chinese EV buyer for making their SUV an affordable purchase.

MAGA believe if we get rid of EVs, gas will be cheaper.

David
So if we were to buy Chinese made electric cars we would be taking advantage of the chinese subsidies and saving our own money as well.
Sounds like a bargain to me.

Made in China 2025 was a Chinese national strategic plan implemented in 2015 that incentivized massive domestic R&D investments in green energy, semiconductors, robotics and advanced manufacturing.
Look it up.

The Made in China 2025 plan has been a massive success and the Chinese economy is now seeing the fruits of their labor and investment with global domination of solar, wind, EV industries.
They are catching up very quickly on AI and semiconductors.

Meanwhile in the USA, the MAGA/GQP plan is to gut all federal R&D investments in health, education, foreign aid (aka supporting US defense companies), social safety net programs like Medicare/Medicaid, SS, food stamps, unemployment, etc.

The air in Beiing is suffocating, China had and has no good alternative but EV's, China tackles problems reasonably, not politically and is ahead of the curve when it comes to results.
US and Western European political systems focus on military might.

A Chinese EV sells for approx $14000 in Canada (before tariff)
So why can't US companies make one for let's say $20K?

Alex
I am living in Canada, I have yet found any Chinese branded auto on the road.
Please let me know where can I buy a $28000 (after 100% tariff) Chinese EV?

Dan H
Since it is the 51st state, Canada has no right to choose.
Whatever the US tells you that is the way you go!

Steven
I paid $22,500 total for a new 2023 Bolt EUV.
Gm is converting its Fairfax, Kansas plant to make the new version.
It will be out late this year.

It's got American and European automakers scrambling.
The United States announced a 100% tariff on all China - made electric cars last year in response, as did the European Union, claiming that the country's industry benefited from unfair government subsidies.

Both the US and EU should provide subsidies then.
If they're not going to do that, then that's their choice.
Considering how China's taken charge of the world's automotive industries as a result of its subsidies, it's worth considering for those whining about it to follow its example.

What's even worse is that the EU and 60 other countries including India, the world's largest market, have mandated EVs.
That means we cannot sell our ICEs in those markets.
The US auto cannot survive on domestic sales alone.
There goes our largest manufacturing segment.
All while we sit doing little.
We better start building EVs that people can afford and that's going to require subsidies.

equator
It wasn't subsidies it was co - operation between the different manufacturers.
The government helped them to develop and use many common units of their manufacturing process, lowering cost by mass production, things like windshield wiper motors, sun roofs, brake parts, all the manufacturers using the common part (including Telsa) that is innovation not subsidy.

John
The EV revolution will also make China the unquestioned leader in batteries; which will have many other applications.

Donal
americans can't compete they are lazy and spoiled.
This country is not only losing the trade war, it's losing allies.

John
The Chinese EVs have much lower production costs as China wages are lower, factories more modern, supply chain is more efficient and infrastructure is better.
Just look at hourly wage in the US auto plants.
In China, it is max of $8 per hour all inclusive.vs. $80 per hour in the US.

Jameds
China appears to be making more progress in improving their country.
It's been a remarkable change over the past several decades.

No real freedom in the USA.
Politicians talk the talk but seldom walk the walk.

Most by a large margin are bought and paid for by lobbies and large corps in the MIC.
You mean nothing to them.
George Carlin 30 years ago was 100% correct, "Its a big club and you ain't in it!"

china is building record numbers of COAL BURNING power plants.
their evs are made in china and the government subsidizes them.
now tell us how green this is.

custard
That's because China has our population plus 1.1 billion more.
Per person the USA creates more CO2 than the Chinese.
If we matched their per person emissions then we would need to cut our CO2 emissions almost in half.
So when do we start Mr. All - concerned - about - the - environment?

tooold
what did you expect.

Jamest
Amazing what subsidizing can accomplish.

Sunny
All being powered by coal power plants.

They most likely force their population to buy home - made cars.
Same as their phones.
Push them to use a phone made in china.

lars
This is good for China!
Send all the EV's there.

Steven
China is the world's largest exporter of autos.
Want to guess what country is the world's auto largest importer?
Here's a hint, their initials are USA.

yelow
Care to guess which car is the USA's biggest export?
BMW.
And the USA's largest exporting state?
Alabama, which doesn't make a single American car.
