As a Chinese, we must remind you that it is expensive for you to buy. You should know that the food market before the Spring Festival is the most expensive time. After the Spring Festival, prices will drop by 30%.

That’s true. I am from Macau and all our vegetables and meat, fish comes from the mainland China. These last few days before CNY it’s was a bit expensive compare to normal days.

@MD4564 Oh my god, this is so shocking. In my city in China, one pound (500g) of eggs, about 10, cost less than one dollar. 5 yuan per kilogram. It's our currency, Chinese yuan.

well, the city Kunming is different even in china. the city is well known for it's "forever ss", tropical sunshine but cool temperature. vegetables are among the cheapest ALL YEAR around.

Vegetables and mushrooms are especially cheap in Kunming.

There are many wet markets in every city and town in China, and there are vegetables and fruit vendors on the streets everywhere.

I totally agree with you. A healthy plant based diet would help reduce the most prevalent illnesses weighing down many countries such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and even some types of cancer. Healthier workers means for effective and efficient labour force and less financial burden on the healthcare system.

Happy Chinese New Year. Wish you and your family safe, prosperous, healthy and joyful 2025. Enjoy the people, culture, and what the country provides. Only people that are uneasy or paranoid of China are people who are planning to be Evil to others. You so lucky to be living in China. And thanks for educating all of us who are not lucky enough to live there.

Many people say that Chinese food is unhealthy because it always uses a lot of oil. In fact, the oil intake from eating Chinese food is always small, and it does not enter the food. When you finish eating food, the oil will be thrown away as food residue. When I found out that salad dressing and mayonnaise are made with 95% oil and 5% eggs, I was shocked because you always unknowingly consume a lot without realizing it. At the same time, China's sugar intake is also very small, and the highest rating of Chinese people for dessert is not sweet. China also has traditional Chinese medicine dietary therapy theory to guide diet. It is precisely because of these that Chinese cuisine is very healthy

Lizzie: the market where you buy the vegetables, is often referred to as a wet market (for obvious reason).

I love to watch markets from all around the world!
Comparing apples to oranges - these prices are 25% lower than I would get at the farmer's market here in my Netherlands

Love your logic China is successful because of Vegetables Means more Energy and more resources towards infrastructure. Yes so true! Health is wealth

“a'yi” mostly means elder ladies rather than aunt, which may remind chinese girls their youth is passing. so we usually use "mei'nv" as you beauty, or "gu'niang" as miss

I bought the (Mandarin oranges) from Costco Canada yesterday, it was 22.99 dollars for 24 pieces, so we are talking about 1 Canadian dollar each!

98 rmb for that variety of veggies is cheap in new year week. Xmas week in Western countries are jacked up in price.

Holy,,,, it could have cost more than Canadian dollars 100 here! dang, you guys are in paradise!

In Kunming city where she lives, most vegetables are under Canadian 50 cents per pound, most fruits under Canadian $1 per pound, there are always surplus fruits selling for under Canadian 50 cents per pound. Meats aren't that much cheaper in Kunming though, about Canadian $4 per pound for pork tenderloin, $5 per pound for beef.
The overall cost of living in Kunming is low, about 1/3 of that in Shanghai or Beiing.
Bai420-h2k
This meat is more expensive than Shanghai. Meituan Dingdong 400g, 12 RMB, and it is delivered to your door

Lizzie,ut this on the Red Note..I'm sure Americans will aprreciate how much food prices for CNY cost and compare it to X'mas.
Dorah-q8w
Is that a village market?
dorawang5451
No, in the city. this type market is cheaper than supermarket. Government set this kinda markets in the city during the late 90th, to give city folks access to cheap fresh food.
bruceburns1672
China functions because the common people are hard workers and are organized know how to supply the market with what it wants.

$55 USD would be wonderful for that food! The meat alone would cost that much

You lost 23 kilos. Now that's a big ga turkey!

That beef was about $5 a lb. Depending on the quality and cut of the meat, it is not really that cheap. Unless it is from open range, grass feed, and organic.

The eating habits of Americans are like telling the whole world that their healthcare is free.
JWW60
It's trueabout america but mainly its due to most Americans that you see over weight is due to they worked a hard labor life and have injuries and the still eat healthy for the most part it's just thier bodies don't allow them to walk that great son thier children help them. But china does have a better diet other than soy which is not good for males.

I just dont understand why the Chinese famers dont plant asparagus. If they did, the price would come down quickly.

If you are fat in China, everytime you see family they will say "why you so fat".

I hate packaged fruits and vegetables. They force you to buy a package and when you get home and fine 25%-40% if mushy or bad, you are reluctant to go back to the supermarket and ask for refund. And all the plastic packing
producer169
Putting the vegetables to your nose to smell and not buying is not considerate of the person who will eventually buy that batch
