China's independently-developed and fully electric-powered AS700D civil manned airship has completed its first scientific flight test in central China's Hubei. The lithium battery-powered airship has a designed max speed of 80km/h and can reach an altitude of up to 3,100 meters, with a capacity to carry up to 10 people. After the AS700D enters the market, it can be widely used in various scenarios such as low-altitude tourism, aerial advertising, urban security, aviation exploration and emergency rescue.

@TacticalMayo Not necessarily true. A zeppelin has a rigid internal framework while an electric airship can be either rigid like a traditional zeppelin or non-rigid like a Blimp.

I love it! I'm always glad to see a new airship in the world. We would call this a "Blimp". I lived in Miami as a kid, and would rejoice when the famous Goodyear Blimp flew overhead, kids would run outside to see it. I got to touch it once, I thought the gasbag would be soft, like a pillow, but it seemed more like wood. This seems like the dream of flight, under some circumstances you surely can turn off the motors for a bit, and just silently hang in the air! This might only be experienced otherwise in a glider. Or a free balloon of course. What an experience!

Only the old ones filled with flamable gas. Isnt the case for long time already. Only reason why they arent used anymore is because they are too big and slow, so for normal aviation purposes, they arent optimal. Today they are only used in some niche roles as tourism or advertisment.

Now? Helium-filled blimps and dirigibles have been around for nearly a century since Goodyear used it in the Pilgrim. Hydrogen has the advantage that it's half the molecular weight and provides more buoyancy, but it also leaks faster and has this nasty habit of catching on fire. Reminds me of when toy balloons are filled with hydrogen and there have been some pretty large disasters where people have died from fires.

However, I do remember visiting China about 15 years ago and seeing a Goodyear blimp in the sky.
