What's the mineral deal?

The agreement comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster international support against Russia's ongoing aggression, which has led to significant territorial losses and humanitarian crises since the conflict escalated in 2022.

These areas are not only strategically important but also rich in mineral resources, including coal, iron ore, and rare earth elements.

Why is US interested in Ukranian minerals?

As per a report by Reuters, one of the main drivers for US to lockdown Ukranian minerals is the Trump administration's focus on China.
China and Trump are locked in the initial stages of what could be a major trade war. But Beiing is the world's largest producer of rare earths, which are used to make magnets found in electric vehicles, weaponry and electronics.

China has slowly grown to control the entire sector in the past 30 years.

The US currently imports 70% of its total imports of rare earths from China, according to a 2025 report from the U.S. Geological Survey.
