The image of farmers hauling their wares on foot past Chongqing’s futuristic skyscrapers is a reminder that for many – especially rural residents and the elderly – making a living is still a struggle in the world’s number two economy.

Remember these farmers are an older generation who have not had the opportunity to go to university and find higher paying jobs. They are doing what they know best and are trying to make a living selling their products instead of turning to stealing and crime. They also contribute to making other people,s cost of living more affordable. They should be appreciated.

If you live like me in a country who even today has higher GDP per capita than China (Argentina U$D 14.200 vs China U$D 12.400) and watch the poverty, the inequality, the corruption, the misery, the suffering specially of old people you interpret the story very different. Argentina has above 50% of poverty, crumbling infrastructure, a neoliberal madman as president, and a general sense of no way out. And I know this repeat in a lot of countries.
Inequality is a product of capitalism so no surprise here, but the way China as achieve to lift a billion of his people from extreme misery in only two generations it's the major contribution in history against inequality inside a socio-economic system who it's rigged to benefit the rich.

Farmers, don't have to be like the ones in other countries driving hours to enter the city, rather than that, can enjoy cheap and comfortable subways.

Yeah, Chinese society has their priorities upside down. The government should help to correct this social injustice by paying farmers a subsidy for their produce for feeding society generally. It breaks my heart each time I see farmers struggling to earn a living.
Without farmers everyone has food insecurity, including the rich and powerful. Farmers are really the backbone of all societies.
For now, I can only "tip my hat" to the farmers for their daily struggles to feed us.
