China imposes retaliatory tariffs on Canadian farm and food products

China on Saturday announced retaliatory tariffs on some Canadian farm and food imports, after Canada imposed duties in October on Chinese-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.

The new duties become effective March 20, according to a statement by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council. Additional 100% tariffs will be imposed on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes and peas, and additional 25% tariffs will apply to pork and aquatic products.

The tariffs add to global trade tensions already high, with rounds of tariff announcements by the United States, China, Canada and Mexco.

The duties come in retaliation for Ottawa imposing tariffs against Chinese imports in October, including a 100% surtax on all Chinese-made EVs and 25% on steel and aluminum imports.

Excessive tariffs and retaliatory tariffs were a major cause of the 1929-30 Great Depression. Nations of the world ought to negotiate to work out issues more.

Beachgirl
The Great Depression was also caused by stock over-speculation that led to 700 banks collapsing in '29, and 3,000 in 1930 (a massive concentration of wealth of moguls and an investor class of the Roaring 20's).
Granted, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff caused a collapse in world trade, but also the Federal Reserve's policies in the 1920s may have contributed, too.
I get you wrote "a" major cause and not the only cause... I just tried to put that into a context that was larger and more complex.

Preventing immigration also contributed...it devastated the labor force and prevented tax revenue growth.

Craig
There were no real issues before trump started this trade war...not sure what you think the rest of the world is suppose to negotiate.

Chunk
Had nothing to do with it all. It was about overvaluing and greed.

Craig
You literally have no idea what you are talking about...leave this to the adults....chuckles.

Unfortunately the world is connected by globalization. When one falls so do all the rest. I'm not sure people understand our economy and the world economy. It relies on cooperation for success. Yes, tariffs need to be negotiable and agreed upon, if someone decides to step away from an agreement then a tariff war happens, and all bets are off. No one wins in a tariff war except the consumer loses.. The consumer is already suffering because of inflation, if it gets worse, you will see long unemployment lines and a lot of very unhappy voters.

I don't completely agree... Context matters which, like many things that are unpopular off and on, can be both good or bad.
For example, during 40 continuous years of Liberal Progressives controlling the WH and both chambers of Congress (with 2 two-year cycles the exceptions), the US had the highest paid workers in the world, with the highest standard of living, creating the broadest (largest) middle class and the most prosperous. This happened while American businesses flourished and grew. The reason that was possible was that tariffs protected US wage levels.
I agree that the way the GOP uses tariffs is insanity, and arbitrary, and even poisonous to our own economic health. But tariffs are just a tool that can be used well, or used like a sledge to break and destroy.

Non co unist countries can't compete when every business is subsidized in that country and there way of life isn't what a free nation is the US was fine importing few products mostly raw materials like fruit compounds etc before the collapse of US manufacturing by the 70's then the offshore off dirty manufacturing and super cheap labor won the hearts of corporations and green activists put it in there hands you can only blame politicians and unions.

Too bad liberals didnt think " no one wins" when Bidens imposed tarriffs on China.

Do you mean like when Nazi Germany fell? O Fascist Italy Fell? Or Dic ship Iraq fell? The world does business, it is not connected. Wake up.

Canada will have to determine which country is the biggest threat to its security, the US or China. Personally, China would be the best ally due to her consistency. The US is a high risk ally (ex-ally) as every 4 years all prior deals will be suddenly changed.
That said, no one can compete with Chinese EV's. Tough call here Canada. Good luck Neighbor! I still love you guys.

Chunk
So how long you figure Canada would be an ally before China has full control over it? Because China's goal is to control the world. Or do you deny that too?

Rudy
Canada, not as a sovereign state, used US laws to unjustly detained Huawei's CEO daughter, Meng, because of industrial competition to detain her for 3-years in British Columbia. May be Canada had always wanted to be the 51st state and now is the opportunity.

Piered
Canadians never wanted to be part of the USA.
Most of us are very upset at the USA right now.

J
It wouldn't be much a fight to take it.

"Canada announced tariffs on Chinese goods last August following similar duties being imposed by the U.S. and the European Union against Chinese-made EVs and other products."
It's about time Canada pursues an independent trade policy instead of trying to be in lock-step with the ungrateful US.

Blah
yea, those 200% tariffs on US dairy into canada pre trump are totes the move of a grateful ally.

ant
China subsidized their EV makers just like US subsidized theirs. However, Tesla dominated the market especially in the early years so Tesla took most of those subsidies.

Wow, Canada making friends all over the world. How many weeks before you think your economy will collapse.

One third of US factories are sitting idle right now. It only takes two months to retool. Bring manufacturing back to the US.

Nemeesis
I worked in factories almost my entire life. It would take managers more than two months to decide what color fence to put up around a project of “retooling” a factory. I was working at General Dynamics in San Diego when they decided to expand the machine shop to accept large CNC mills. It took them well over a year and when they started running the machines they discovered they had placed them too close together and they crashed into each other. It would take close to the end of Trumps term before all those idle factories could be up and running. Great, now try and find workers willing to be paid what Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese etc accept. If iPhones were made by people in the USA they would cost $10,000. Sneakers…$600 a pair. The only way for us to stop importing cheap goods is by ending globalism and having a self contained economy. That will never happen as long as capitalism is in force. Try telling shareholders they can’t take advantage of foreign cheap labor.

Plissken
I have also worked in factories my whole life. You have to get the right people for the projects. Obviously your management people could not handle it, which is typical for in-house management. We had a whole plant added to our facility that was contracted out and it was done in a year.

You don't get it. US lost manufacturing jobs because other countries, like China pay their workers peanuts. All GOP did when Biden was in power, was complain about the cost of everything. If you bring the manufacturing jobs back to the USA, the USA won't be able to afford anything they make.

truth
I love tariffs. It is a consumption/luxury tax that is voluntary. It evens the paying field where those who don't pay taxes yet receive "refunds" every year can start pulling the wagon too. Clearly with a 36 TRILLION debt the government needs much more people paying taxes at higher amount. 90% would almost cover the Govs spending but I'm sure they can think of hundreds of more programs that will need billions a year to fund.
