How is life in India after returning from the Gulf, specifically, the UAE?

Horrible. I spent my entire life in Dubai. The UAE was home for me. But then I had to come back to india in 2023 cuz my parents thought tht higher education was much better here. I was 14 as of 2023. I'll turn 16 this year and I still feel horrible. I feel homesick. I had friends of 6 years there, I miss them with all my heart. Ik dubai pretty well, but here in bangalore I feel like a complete stranger. Ppl tell me tht I'm an Indian and tht I should stop missing dubai sm. But how tf should I do tht? My entire life was there. I spent 11 years in Dubai. I was in the same school for 10 years of my life, I had friends of 6 years and most importantly Dubai was my home. Nah Dubai is still my home. UAE is my country. I can never consider Bangalore as home. I went to dubai for a week in Oct 2024 and ISTG I felt so good. I felt like someone brought me back home after 2 years of suffering I hell. My heart ached when I had to return. I cried a lot. I hate india. Although, I was in an Indian school in dubai, the education system, the people, the lifestyle in india is completely different and I hate it. I miss home. No matter wht ppl say, Dubai is always gonna be my home and I'm forever gonna be a gulf kid.

As a kid who was born and raised in Abu Dhabi, it was so difficult during the initial years. Like, it's ENTIRELY different, like Culture, lifestyle, schools, shop and literally everything. I moved when I was turning 13, I was wee during the first week when I moved to kerala because I literally spend my whole childhood in uae with entirely different people(even though Indians were there) and lifestyle. The lifestyle was very tough to adapt. Luckily, I studied in an Indian school back in Uae, so Indian culture wasn't that strange for me but only tough to adapt especially the lifestyle. I literally wasted the initial year missing and thinking uae. I was acting weird and my relatives were treating me like an alien lol. After 1 and half years, I went back to uae for a visit. And it was a big recovery for me!! Now I'm 19..and the lifestyle here in Kerala have changed a LOT than back then. Like, kerala have developed so much..!! I love country now and happily enjoying my life here now

With lot of unemployment in India those who return from abroad find it difficult to get a suitable position. However if they can start their own enterprise with their savings in the gulf countries , it will be fine.

Though I love both UAE and India for their own idiosyncracies, these were the highlights from my life when I returned to India six years ago from UAE in particular and Middle East in general:
I was suddenly free of a minor allergy which I had when I was in UAE. Guess the air in India is more dust free - resulting in an allergy free life. This one I hadn’t frankly expected. (I get the flu back when I go on visits to UAE - which is easily rectified by using saline nasal sprays)
I miss the diversity of people from UAE. Though you have Indians around you in UAE - you also have people from other countries which gives you different perspectives on issues - not the case in India.
Your average sanitary products (soaps, shampoos, etc.) are usually of higher quality in UAE (because the prices are higher?) than in India. Though I have seen a steady increase in quality of the Indian goods over the last six years - they are yet to match the quality.
Various cuisines in UAE are really good - say if it is Labanese food - the food prepared is by actual Labanese people (and it is cheap too). Compared to that, the different cuisines you get in India tastes quite fake - unless you are ready to burn a hole in your pocket going to a 5 Star Hotel’s restaurant. If you see the other side of the coin, authentic Indian stuff like Chaat, you can truly enjoy only in India. The chaat versions in UAE are so healthy and rich that you cannot enjoy it. Even dosas are too rich in taste (excessive ghee?) and expensive.
Apart from the regular meals - you’ll be somewhat disappointed with the snacks too - like the chocolates and chips you were used to in UAE/Gulf would have felt so much better (though Indian grown kids might feel the same about Indian snacks). Luckily there are certain shops in major cities that exclusively sell snacks important from Middle East, albeit at a premium rate. So, don’t worry - you’ll still get your Maltesars & Kitkat Chunkies. On the flip side, Indian snacks like Murukku, Boondhi are fresher and tastier in India.
Mosquitoes. Enough said. Though you wouldn’t find them in posh areas or highrise buildings.
Monsoons - as people who’ve been too long in Middle East, it is always lovely to see rains.
Maggi (Noodles) - the Indian version just tastes so drastically different from the Middle East one that you wouldn’t like it and feel inclined to bring some from Middle East initially.
Though Amul cheese is well and good, your Gulf tongue would crave for Kraft and Almarai.
Indian curd is no match for Middle East Yogurt.
You will have to attend all your hundreds of cousins and friends’ weddings in India. If you love weddings good for you, else get ready to have your weekends gobbled up hel in the wedding arrangements. Being “far away” would no longer be an excuse you can give - attend the wedding or face the wrath of angry relatives forever.
Poor people all around - having rarely seen a begger in UAE, you’ll end up giving away a lot of money initially.
Miss your friends from UAE - you can’t see them more than once or twice a year. If they also move out to their own countries - you’ll probably never see them again as your vacations wouldn’t match. Skype is banned in UAE, so you will have tough time doing Video Calls too.
Nonetheless you’ll always be seen as an NRI no matter officially you’ll be no longer one after staying in Indian for a while.
