Vietnam loves Korea and Japan so much and hates China so much. Why doesn't Vietnam imitate/follow Korean and Japanese cultures but still fiercely imitate/copy even more Chinese culture and everything from China in present day?

Vietnamese hate China because of the dispute over the South China Sea, where Vietnamese boats have been rammed. Everyone in Vietnam loves Trump.

Vietnamese certainly love K-pop and K-drama, but I’m not sure that translates to loving Korea. Vietnamese watch a lot of Chinese drama as well.

They want to learn Japanese so they can work at a Japanese company. Manga is huge as well. The kiddies all read Doreamon and the older ones have other cartoons. I had them explain to me why Doreamon is either yellow or blue or whatever he is.

Who’s the real cat-like robot?

Vietnam's cultural ties with China stem from over a millennium of shared history, including Confucian values, administrative systems, and literary traditions deeply embedded in Vietnamese society. These foundations, established during periods of Chinese rule and influence, remain intrinsic to Vietnam’s national identity despite modern geopolitical tensions.

In contrast, Vietnam's admiration for Korea and Japan centers on contemporary soft power—K-pop, technology, or fashion—which complements rather than replaces traditional frameworks.

Political friction with China (e.g., territorial disputes) coexsts with cultural legacy, while Korea and Japan offer modern, apolitical cultural exports. Thus, Vietnam integrates new global trends without overturning historical roots shaped by China.

Stupid babbling.None do not copy everything other. Many Chinese are stupid arrogant that’s why they bark like mad dogs of things they don’t know .

Everyone copied each other when they like something and it is popular. China copied Japanese manga/anime art style, copied modern fashion sense from South Korea and made their C-dramas look like K-dramas, but yet they justify each accusation by saying China civilized South Korea, and Japan thousand years ago like remember the Tang, the Han, etc

Kind of dumb question honestly.

Vietnam doesn’t actively or willingly copy China, it was ruled over by China for over 1000 years so obviously their culture will be very similar.

Later on, both of our governments became so obviously there would be a lot of collab and similarity in the governement side.

Why we hate you guys ? Government propaganda after 1979 War, Paracels Island dispute, and past wars.

Hello Mister China PRC,

Because China hate Western and copy everything about Western at the same time.

Even worse, China makes bad copies and produces as many fake things as it can.

I’ve been to Vietnam and China both and enjoyed both trips. I had to laugh about (specifically: WITH) the question, because to my Western eyes the two countries do seem to have a lot in common, both in their traditions and in the way they have opened up to the West and capitalism while retaining a one-party system.

As for why Vietnam mistrusts China: No wonder! China occupied the northern part of Vietnam for 1,000 years. Vietnam’s language isn’t even related to Chinese

The most recent war Vietnam was involved in was in 1978, when China staged an invasion to punish Vietnam

China claims some of the same islands that Vietnam does in what Vietnamese don’t want to call the South China Sea.

It’s not unusual for countries bordering each other to have fraught relations.

The same can be said about China and the West.

You can absorb the ideas, technology, institutions, culture of another society/state without necessarily subordinating yourself to them politically.

In fact you can also co-opt and turn those very same ideas/institutions/technologies etc. against their original creators. Very smart.

Why does China hate the West and yet copies everything about it at the same time?

Trolling works both ways, you know ;)

Did China steal Vietnam's culture or did Vietnam steal China's culture? Why do these two countries have similar cultures?

Stealing culture is an interesting way of putting it

With all the formal occasions around the world today, where suits are worn, would anyone say that those who wear suits have stolen the culture of the British or Europeans?

College students around the world commonly wear jeans, would anyone say that those who wear jeans have stolen the culture of the American miners?

Almost 200 years ago, and going back 3000-4000 years, China was the most powerful country and civilization in the whole of East and Southeast Asia, and it was only natural for the neighboring countries and peoples to learn Chinese culture.

They would adopt the Chinese management system, examination system, ranking system of officials, and even the clothing of officials would refer to China. As well, many neighboring countries use Chinese as their official language. Even though they invented their own language, the upper class takes pride in speaking and writing Chinese, and major events, and the residences of high-ranking officials, are written in Chinese.

This is not surprising. The Chinese now have both Chinese and English on all their street signs, fluent English speakers look down on those who can't speak English, and contracts signed by Chinese and foreign companies will have an English version of the contract in addition to the respective languages of the two countries, with the stipulation that if there is a dispute, the English version of the contract will prevail. Why? Because for nearly 200 years or so, Britain and the succeeding United States were the most powerful countries and they both spoke English. So is China stealing the culture of Britain or the United States by doing this? No, it isn't.

Chinese singers are proud to be on billboard, and Chinese movies, even if they make a billion dollars at the box office, will not be recognized by everyone as long as the box office comes only from China. Is this China stealing American culture? No. It is precisely China that is learning from American culture.

So, the relationship between Vietnam and China is like the relationship between China and the United States now. Because America is very powerful, China learns from him. Back then, China was very powerful, so Vietnam studied China. If you don't think that Chinese people wearing suits and speaking English now is a theft of American culture, then you shouldn't think that Vietnam's imitation of China back then was a theft of Chinese culture either.

Well, it would only be a theft of American and British culture if, say, China one day said that the ancestors of the British came from China, that the Chinese invented English first, and that suits first appeared in China. There's a country that does that all the time, but I won't talk about it.
