Earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand: Heartbreaking photos, video show extent of devastation
A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, destroying buildings, damaging roads and bridges, and leaving more than 150 people dead.
The 7.7 magnitude quake struck at midday about 10 miles from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of about 1.5 million. Strong aftershocks followed, including one that was measured at 6.4 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The head of Myanmar’s military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, said on state-run television that at least 144 people were killed and 730 others were injured in the war-torn country.
In Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, officials said that at least 10 people were killed, more than a dozen injured and about 100 others missing.
The death toll in both countries was expected to rise.
Stunning photos and videos captured just some of the destruction left by the quake.
In Bangkok, emergency crews and first responders raced to a high-rise under construction that collapsed. A video taken by a motorist on a highway showed the moment the 33-story building fell.
Other images showed people who flooded into the streets as buildings swayed. Traffic in the central part of the city came to a standstill Friday evening as aftershocks shut down the rail system.

That's big and scary. I was in LA in January 1994 for that one, 6.5 maybe? The hotel building was swaying. The concrete stairs moving as I went down, holding hands in the dark with a strange man from another room who was whining. I had my iron and ironing board set up and the iron flew across the room. It felt like the exorcist.

I live in california and come from a family who survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that was estimated to be over 8 on the Richter scale ( it wasn't invented yet so the magnitude is an estimate based on the destruction) . This is a reminder of those that live on the west coast of the USA to alwways be prepared for the so called 'Big One'. I went throught the 1989 Loma Prieta shaker that many thought was the Big One that did major damage to San Francisco's marina neighborhood, having been built on landfill from the 1906 earthquake. This earthquake colapsed and pancaked several large apartment buildings trap many and started several major fires due to broken natural gas lines.

I'm from Long Beach. Living in BKK. Didn't even feel this one.

Thankfully I’ve never been in one even when we lived in the PNW. Only a simulation at a museum.
Personally if I have to be in a natural disaster, I’ll take a tornado-at least we can usually get a fair warning for those!
I hope these folks find survivors quickly!

They say the west coast of California is in for a big one at some point in time.

Being trapped under a collapsed building is the stuff of nightmares. Hope any survivors are found quickly.

As a career professional Firefighter/Paramedic for 40+ years before retiring. I was trained in confined space rescue. If those building pancaked, like in 9/11. There is little hope except for the "miracle few". Think about the sounds you heard at 9/11 ground zero right after? Those were our brethren's "Still" (PASS) alarms, designed to go off after 30-45 seconds of no movement. The alarms survived, the users did not.
Hope for miracles. Expect very few.

I’m 25 years in Fire Admin…ever since 9/11 when I hear the guys PASS go off during training it brings it all back…hearing those on the rubble and knowing what they were.
May they find survivors quickly here!!

Modern tall buildings pancake. Watch the videos. Smaller masonry structure slip off foundations or collapse to a side. Very little hope for those in skyscrapers.
I also wonder what building codes are like there and if seismic bracing is required and the requirement enforced.

Thank you for your many years of service. It's not said enough to firefighters. Semper Fi

It looks absolutely horrific. I wish them swift medical and rescue support but I know the place will be scarred for many years

The survivors under the rubble in Gaza are devoured by wild dogs. I hear they are quite plump.

So awful, just devastating. Looking at those buildings, I am sure there are people trapped in them. My heart just breaks for all those affected. Our Earth gives a false sense of safety and stability but it is anything but. It's a planet that is constantly changing and we are all just living on it.

Wow. My heart goes out to those affected. Devastation.

When a country gives itself over to false gods and idols, it brings ruin to that country. So God has removed His protection from these Buddhist lands.

My parents and I lived in Bangkok during the 1960's & 1970's when there were still many huge "klongs" (waterways) which bisected and traversed the city. I attended middle and high school at the International School of Bangkok. Over the past decades, most of the "klongs" have been drained, land-filled and have had hundreds of enormous high-rise buildings erected. Most of Bangkok still sits upon old original unstable jelly-like ground. Meanwhile, I await communication from numerous friends regarding their safety, welfare and first-hand trusted information.

My personal non-professional interpretation of the collapse seems to indicate an issue other than a foundation/landfill problem.

A bit of seismic history: For those who might not recall yesterday March 27th was the 61st anniversary of the great Alaska earthquake that hit @ 5:36PM Good Friday March 27th 1964. This earthquake was one of the largest ever recorded, shook for 10 minutes and registered something like 9.0 on the Richter scale. Anchorage was almost wiped off the map, several parts of the city sunk something like 20 ' and small towns on the coast were destroyed and washed out to sea killing thousands. The devastation didn't stop there. This earthquake that originated in the Gulf of Alaska generated a large tsunami that devastated downtown Crescent City California, hit Hawaii and went as far as Chile.

Just spent a year in se Asia, mostly in Thailand.. besides the occasional border run or visiting the north and south most time was spent in Bangkok … I was supposed to be flying back out in the next week or so (surprise visit to my family in the states for my bday and my brother and sister in laws anniversary which is also my bday) - this is just tragic… heartfelt condolences to all, I wish and hope for the best for everyone involved.

I experienced the 3/11 earthquake in Japan, a magnitude 9 quake, while on a business trip. I was on the 25th floor of an office building, which swayed violently with a terrible creaking noise as ceiling panels fell. The building in front of me kept disappearing and reappearing due to the intense movement. On top of that, a 10-meter tsunami struck the Fukushima nuclear power plant, triggering a nationwide radiation scare, along with shortages of bottled water and food. This situation reminds me of that day. I pray for those in Myanmar and Thailand.

I've seen video of high-rise buildings visibly swaying, but not in unison. Partly due to differing height, and partly due to distance between them. Traditional, 5-story Japanese Pagodas were designed so that they could sway - the floors sliding/flexng against one-another - to dissipate the destructive lateral force, instead of 'harmonically' self-destructing.

It was that quake-induced tsunami that caused the deaths of 11,000 people there, not the quake itself.

Have lived in East Asia, traveled in Southeast Asia, and lived in Los Angeles during the 1984 earthquake. Big quakes are really scary even if damage isn't bad where you are; when there's loss of life and major property damage, they're horrendous. My heart goes out to those affected.

This is tragic, hope those trapped under collapsed buildings are rescued quickly. Seeing that building under construction collapse was terrifying. While the collapse is tragic for the workers there, it would have killed thousands of people had it been finished and occupied. Something doesn't add up and corners must have been cut during construction.

I can understand how they felt regarding this earthquake. I was in San Francisco during the Loma Prieta earthquake. Many of my friends homes were totally destroyed

Blessings to those affected. America used to lend a hand or supplies when things like this happened but now we are not allowed to be help our fellow humans. Good luck Myanmar, we are with you in spirit, at least some of us

Look at that pile of construction rubble in Thailand. It was a Chinese firm that was building it as reported by news agencies. Perhaps they should have hired a Japanese firm to design and build it because the Japanese are masters at building earthquake resistant buildings.

I'm sorry to hear people lost their lives in Thailand. I was station in Thailand in 1970. The Thai people were very friendly too the Americans in the military.
