The US government has banned its personnel in China, including diplomats, security-cleared contractors, and their families, from engaging in any romantic relationships with Chinese citizens.

The Associated Press (AP), citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the policy was put into effect by former US ambassador Nicholas Burns in January. US personnel stationed in China were verbally and electronically informed of the new rule.

Those with pre-exsting relationships can request an exemption, but if denied, they must either end the relationship or leave their position. Any violations result in immediate expulsion from China.

Previously, only specific agencies had restrictions on relationships with foreign nationals, but this blanket ban is unprecedented in recent times. A less restrictive version was introduced last summer, targeting relationships between American personnel and Chinese staff working at the US Embassy and consulates. However, Burns expanded it to apply to all Chinese citizens in China just days before leaving office.

After your research was done, in those days, the Chinese had so much clout in the US that they would advise you to leave and go back. They have had more three decades of penetration.
Today the details of almost every single innovation that occurs in the West can be sourced within hours in mainland China. Anything that's useful done in the West is fully replicated within China in a matter of months - if not days or weeks. Most of that isn't reported either. On the other hand, China has a technology lead and a manufacturing lead over the West - that the West is unable to equalise that.

I really don’t have a problem with this. When you hold a security clearance you have to be more careful and China is not allied with us. My father held a top secret clearance in the military and had to get permission to marry my mother a BRITISH national. Britain is our ally and they still performed a FBI background check on her before they were allowed to be married.
