China’s role in Africa reflects one of the most significant shifts in global alliances and economic power dynamics over the past decade. In 2024, China's trade with Africa increased nearly 5 per cent year on year. Initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, Beiing’s plan to grow global trade, and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation have contributed to the rise of China as the continent's top trading partner. Despite its domestic economic slowdown, China’s relationship with African nations is evolving as Beiing shifts towards public-private partnerships and engaging financial institutions for project funding rather than traditional government-to-government loans. Trade is also diversifying, with Africa exporting more non-resource goods like coffee and avocados to China.

There are two kind of debt, productive debt and consumptive debt. Loan to build infrastructure is productive debt. Without proper infrastructure economy will not grow. All poor nation struggle to get infrastructure loan from rich countries. If Chinese loan is so bad, why don't the West come with their own package of low interest loan for Africa. That's right they won't, because the risk is high, low yield and long term. They don't won't to help, but they smear those who want to help.

The reason the West prefers that these entities be controlled by private enterprises is that they can then impose coercive policies to make them work for their interests at the detriment of both China and Kenya. E.g. Western countries can legislate to force these private enterprises to prevent Chinese enterprises from using the infrastructure they have subsidized. As a private company, they will have to comply or go out of business. It cannot fight back.

Just a friendly reminder, China often doesn't meddle with their partner countries internal government. They don't audit them thoroughly, whether their partner corrupt or not.
I'm not saying that western investors is better. But China do need some scrutinize their partner more.
