Well , from what I know , its not a simple yes or no . Its complicated , you know? Like , China's got a HUGE army , way bigger than Japans . But Japan , theyve got really advanced tech , right ? Could China actually *supply* a massive invasion force? Kee an army that big fed and armed is a huge undertaking , and we dont really know what their supply lines are like. And the distances involved are insane . Its just… its a massive what if. So much could happen . And theres the economic factor too , a war would be crazy expensive for both countries. Nobody really wins in a war like that . It would be a huge disaster. I've read some articles and, honestly, they contradict each other . So who knows ? Its a scary thought , you know ? A war between those two . The whole region would be affected. Man, I hope it doesnt happen .

The question relies on one thing

Is allies allowed?

If so than no Chinese troops will never be landing on the main Japanese islands and taking Tokyo.

However if allies are not allowed and it's just China v japan then things get more interesting.

While japan will never defeat China.

It's up for debate if China has the logistics to successfully invade japan. Japan has a decent defense force. It's not weak. But it is weaker than china but considering there is a sea between them I highly doubt the Chinese would be able to invade the country.

Wrong question.

The question isn’t can China defeat Japan. China has planned to defeat the US, NATO, Japan, SK, Australia, and India at the same time. That is like asking can the US defeat Mexco.

The question is to what extent China will destroy Japan after Japan attacks China again. And that is only known to the leadership in China.

I believe not, at least for the next few decades. Japan is a developed country, powerful military force and military alliance with the US and the West. Therefore, China does not dare to open an all-out war with Japan because China knows that going to war with Japan will cause great damage to China. When it comes to activating nationalism for economic or political purposes, China only provokes and opens conflicts in the seas and islands with Japan.

However, the interests behind modern war are complex, so it is difficult for you to put aside the realistic factors and simply talk about one point.

The fact that Japan controls one third of China’s economy is also a factor.

China has historical and current grievances with Japan but China never expressed any intention to conquer or invade Japan.

In past Japan caused a lot of harm to Chinese see Naning massacre -or Rape of Naning- and after world war 2 Japan has been protected by The US to admit any wrongdoing. To my knowledge Japan never admit any wrongdoing or tried to amend what they did to Chinese people.

Currently China has claims on South China sea but they have been denied by the un tribunal they also have to seem problems on East China Sea aswell.

At worst they can do is to punish Japan financially and inhibit their presence in South China sea which is more likely than a full on conquer of their land.

More than likely, yes. If for no other reason than the massive amount of people that China could throw against the coast. If the United States is in play that changes things up a bit, but the answer probably wouldn't change. Japan almost definitely has SAM systems that could put a hurting on Chinese aircraft, but it's important to note that the J-20 is specifically designed to defeat SAM engagements (via radar cross section reduction). There are a million explanations to why China would be capable, but the short answer is “yes more than likely”

HOWEVER, if there is one country in all of Asia that China decided to attack, the Chinese know that hitting Japan would flare tensions immediately with the U.S. The United States has plenty of personnel in Japan and an attack on Japan would likely be seen as China putting U.S. personnel in danger. Because of that, it’s HIGHLY unlikely China would ever invade Japan, let alone conduct substantial kinetic operations. China can swing its power around in the Asian sphere, however, no one denies that the U.S. is the dominant military power and even China isn't willing to go to war with the U.S. all to invade Japan.
