If it's truly "full self driving", you would be taking a nap while the car drives for you around, AND Tesla wouldn't put a disclaimer to warn owners to be ready to take over the wheel. Humanoids are definitely not the most efficient way of automation, but acting like a human does mean it can do a lot of stuff which people would prefer some form of flexbility. Industrial robots are optimized for the specific tasks they were meant for but humanoids bring the possibility of having the robots do things we do but don’t see a simple way to abstract them into actions like repeated movements, recognizing a pattern, etc. We want our experience and knowledge which guides our own bodies to do the job to be used directly for training the robots instead of having to design curriculum for some system that we don’t even know of what they should look like. Therefore, while the humanoids look very dumb at present and there is no very promising RL algorithms for them to magically learn from us yet, we need to first ensure that it can replicate human actions to the finest so it lays a good foundation for future algorithms. As a result, given that efficiency is a big problem of humanoids, seeing a humanoid running half marathon clumsily with multiple human watching out for it is impressive although it doesn’t lead to any practical application yet.
