NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance welcomed “significant progress” in the ongoing negotiations for a mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Deal (BTA) focused on the “welfare of the people of the 2 countries,” as the PM hosted Vance, second lady Usha Vance and their children who are on a 4-day visit to India. According to the US, they formally announced the finalisation of the Terms of Reference for the negotiations, laying down a roadmap for further discussions about shared economic priorities.

新德里消息：印度总理纳伦德拉·莫迪接待了正在对印度进行为期四天访问的美国副总统贾德·万斯、美国第二夫人乌莎·万斯及其子女。期间，莫迪总理和美国副总统贾德·万斯对目前正在进行的、以“两国人民福祉”为重点的双边互惠贸易协定（BTA）谈判中取得的“重大进展”表示欢迎。据美方消息，他们正式宣布确定了谈判的职权范围，为就共同的经济优先事项展开进一步讨论制定了路线图。

Both sides backed an early conclusion of the agreement, which will allow India to stave off the threat from the Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs, as Vance underscored the US pursuit of a fair and balanced trade relationship with India.

“The BTA presents an opportunity to negotiate a new and modern trade agreement focused on promoting job creation and citizen well-being in both countries, with the goal of enhancing bilateral trade and supply-chain integration in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner. Guided by their respective visions of ‘Amrit Kaal for India’ and ‘Golden Age for America,’ BTA is expected to create new opportunities of growth for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries,’’ said an American readout of the meeting.

双方都支持早日达成该协议，这将使印度能够抵御特朗普政府实施的对等关税带来的威胁。万斯强调，美国致力于与印度建立公平、平衡的贸易关系。

Discussing trade agreements falls well under duties that can be assigned to the vice President. The fact that his wife is of Indian decent and thus his children are apart Indian and thus get to learn a bit about their heritage is just a nice bonus. The number Doge is cutting out are in the many millions to billions. I think that we can cough up a few grand for the vice President to try to smooth some international relations that haven't been quite as smooth as we'd like.
